Matilda is a 1996 American fantasy comedy film directed by Danny DeVito. The screenplay by Nicholas Kazan and Robin Swicord is based on Matilda the Musical. It was produced by David Hoberman, Jeffrey M. Sherman, and Ron Meyer and distributed by New Line Cinema. The film stars Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, and Albert Finney. Wilson also co-wrote the screenplay. Wilson won a Young Artist Award for her performance, and the film received several other honors. The plot revolves around the character Matilda, a young girl who is forced to attend an all-girls school in England.
She is unhappy with the way she is treated and constantly seeks revenge on the headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, while at the same time the teacher, Miss Honey, gives her a voice. The film is not without its share of comedy, which carries it through to the end.
